Congratulations to 15 year-old Origin fencer Jack Woods for winning the bronze medal in January’s National American Cup in Columbus, Ohio.

Jack’s win caps an impressive showing for the 15 year-old who competed against 206 fencers up to 20 years of age. The field included the creme de la creme of Junior World Champions, National Champions and top international fencers from countries including Korea, Sweden, Australia and Canada.
An especially memorable moment for Jack occurred during the Semi-Finals when he competed against his favorite all-time fencer, current World Junior Champion, Nick Itkin. Jack gave Nick a run for his money and scored 9 points in the 15-9 bout. “Going up against a fencer whom I have watched and admired for many years was a very interesting experience,” according to Jack. “Although it was nerve wracking, it gave me the opportunity to show my skill level. Then placing third in the overall tournament showed me that I was on their level.”
Coming off of his achievement, Jack looks forward to a bright future in a sport that has been his passion for years. “I love fencing because it requires just as much mental strength as physical strength.” Jack also thrives off of the one-on-one nature of the sport, “relying on teammates can at times be challenging, so training hard and being able to progress from my own work is amazing.”
Congratulations, Jack! We, at Origin, are proud of your accomplishments. We admire your spirit of self-reliance and personal accountability and your willingness to train hard!
